so i yanked the motor out of my unibody this last weekend and cleaned it up a bit so i could take it to a mechanic to have it rebuilt (previous owner stoped driving the truck because it was starting to smoke...a lot) so the question that i have is what is a reasonable price for a thorough rebuild? the mechanic shop quoted me $1200! if this is the case i might be in the market for a running '70 or newer f-150.
Secondly, that is not a bad price, but be sure to ask what all is involved and if that includes parts and labor. I have about $2500 into my 390 and then I did all the assembly. Of course the work was done at a speed shop which specializes in Blue Ovals and includes some parts I had not expected to need, but will it be dandy when done .
Definitely find out what all the machine shop is including for that price; Look in various speed type mag to even include J.c Whitney; granted a 292 & 352 type engine are not as mass produced for rebuilds like 302 360 etc; but price rebuild kits; Also you have to determine boring and piston etc; Possible head(s) work as well?
I recently had a 302 rebuild last year; my mechanic fee , machine shop work and all parts from high volume oil pump up to air breather to include 10.5 to 1 piston ;pro-comp cam ; 650 carb ; holley electric distributor, chrome intake & valve covers etc ran me $2005.30. Also location and access makes price differ; I do have 3 machine shop in my town; so hopefully cost is not to over price. I debated with my mechanic in having the same level of work done on a 352cid and he figure it out to be about double in cost if I choose that route.
Hope this info helps.

thanks guys, the work is for what im told is a "long block rebuild"? basicaly i take in my motor less the generator, startor, carb ect. and it gets completly rebuilt including a new cam. I wasnt planning on doing any go fast parts as my main concern for this truck is that it is extreemly low. looks like ill prob drop it off later this week to get the rebuild going. thanks for the help guys.
