C6 tranny installation

Last weekend I took out my engine (460) to replace the rear main seal and oil pan gasket, now I put the engine back in and try to connect it back onto the tranny. For some reason it will go on untill there's 1/2 inch left to go then it gets hard. I can tighten the 6 bolts that connect the tranny with the engine one by one and that will tighten it together but then the engine won't turn over. If it's off by about 3/8 to 1/2 inch the engine will turn. Did I miss something or am I doing something wrong ?

Any chance that you might have turned the flywheel around? I've seen this happen before on a V6 Pontiac...

Is the torque converter installed properly? Sometimes when you pull the engine the converter comes out a little bit but doesn't get seated back properly.

FORD flywheels will only bolt on 1 way...the holes are drilled in a specific pattern.(AKA...DUMMY PROOFED) but really all externally balanced engines are like this! you have let the T/C slide out. you must separate the engine and trans and re-align the torque converter to the front pump,(apply pressure to the T/C while spinning it with your hand you will feel it slip in). IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS YOU WILL DESTROY THE FRONT PUMP! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! hopefully you have'nt messed it up already! just turning the engine over can do it.
ps ..the pontiac was probably internally balanced which would make no difference how you installed the flywheel.
