Towing with the E40D in overdrive
Hey fellow ford guys. Gotta 95 f250 4x4 with a 7.3 PS and E40D auto with shift kit and huge cooler. When I tow my tuff truck I dont like to use overdrive but almost have to. at 60 mph it revs at 3000 in 3rd. In OD it revs at 2200. Trailer weighs approx 7000 pounds, 4:10 gears, 33 inch tires. Anyone got any advice on this? Thanks Josh

General thought on this is if the truck can hold overdrive without lugging down or hunting for gears then towing in OD is OK. On flat ground you should be fine in OD, might have to lock it out on climbs though. As long as the truck is not constantly shifting between 3rd and OD it should be fine.

I agree with psdpower. If the truck is not "hunting", then pull in OD. (your wallet will appreciate it). I pull a 14,000 lb 5th wheel and pull it in OD all the time unless I am in the mountains. As long as I am running over 65 mph, I never have a problem in OD. Pulling in the mountains, I have had issues with transmission heating up, but I have a trans temp gauge that lets me know when to back off.
