I have a 1988 F-250 with a 460. About a year ago I replaced the radiator and heater core. I have been noticing lately that the radiator is always about a half gallon low on coolant. The overflow container leaks. Would this cause the level of coolant in the engine and radiator to drop that much. Also I have noticed that the coolant system looses pressure very fast. Within less than 5 min I can remove the cap without any pressure. The engine temp guage always reads between n and r on the "normal" scale. When I put in the new radiator I also replaced the thermostat and radiator cap.
Is this a normal thing or is it something I should worry about?
Yes, having a leaky overflow can cause you to lose a lot of coolant, particulary if your motor runs hot. If your system looses pressure fast, then I would suspect a leak. I would probably start with the cap and then check all fittings to make sure it's not slowly venting your coolant and your pressure.
