Sway bar in a 1950 Ford with 8.8" Explorer Rear End

How should the sway bar be mounted to the truck frame? This is hard to explain. I have the rear end in and would like to use the Explorer Sway bar it is installed on the rear end and paid for. Is there an angle that should be maintained or is better? Such as pointing the arms that attach to the sway bar at a 90°angle to the sway bar? Should the arms point towards the rearend? Towards the front? I don't have a clue so anything would be helpful.

Hi Christopher2,

I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing in my '53 so maybe I can help. My situation is a little different because my truck is bagged and I need to make sure I have sway bar clearance if I'm all the way up or all the way down. I'm setting mine up so that the "dip" in the center of the sway bar is 90 degrees to the ground at ride height. It puts the "arms" at a funny angle, but it's the same way it's positioned in the Explorer so I'm assuming that it will be right in our trucks too.

I hope I helped - Brad

Are the bars angles towards the front or back?

Chris the bars go to the rear. I have some pics of my install in my gallery. I did a little mod to the mount links (shortened) then brought them up inside the frame where I boxed mount points, had to bend the sway bar slightly to go inside the frame. And yes the bar should stick out at a 90 from the diff.

How did you shorten them? Cut them with a chop saw and weld back together? I am going to have to look at mine tonight might have to chop them also or aim them towards the rear allot. I think aiming them to much to the rear would defeat the purpose.

yes I just cut them, and v notched, then welded them back togather, I agree that it would be beter to keep them as striaght up and down as possible, rather then laying them to the rear. good luck

8.8" Sway bars

Since I am going after the same setup on my 50 F1; thought I would jump in. I mounted the sway bar and have the supports pretty much perpendicular to frame rails. Did you use any speacial brackets or bushing etc to mount to rails ?

Just used the same end link bushings, and grade 8 bolts and washers to mount to my frame, where I boxed it to make the mount. nothing special about the the mount, just drilled the correct size hole thur my 1/4" boxing plate.
good luck
