My Advice on Paint Scratches

I recently scratched my vehicle at the beach. It was too deep to buff, the only way to repair was to repaint the door and side of the bed. If you should scratch your vehicle do one of the following:

A) Live with it

B) Trade your vehicle in!

I'm serious about trading in, it will be less costly and less hassle than dealing with body shop scumbags. I found this out first hand. I got it repainted and now there is basically more damage than when I took it in. When I first went to pick up the vehicle from the shop, there were many blobs that looked like pimples in the paint job. I politely pointed them out and the guy started acting like an angry jerk. He later lied "oh well it comes from the factory like that". The big scratches are gone but the door molding around the window was mutilated, a mud flap was mangled, the chrome bumper is scratched, and there are a jillion little scratches in the clear coat from when they did me the huge favor of washing it with what must have been a grimy SOS pad. Basically considering the damage and the cost of the "repair" I'd have been far better off trading in for a new truck (less expensive).

FYI the place was
WEKIVA AUTOBODY on Sunshine Rd in Altamonte Springs, FL.

They don't care, it's not their truck or their money. They do lie to your face however.

That's a BOLD statement!! I didn't pay over $30K for my truck to get dinged/scratched up. If that's the way you feel about your truck, I believe you are the minority!

Rocketfish - Did you go through your insurance to get this fixed? If so, contact them to make it right. I believe you were taken by an unreputable Body Shop. Call the Better Business Bureau.

I know how expensive it is to fix these scratches. I had a deep scratch on my door and it cost over $700 to repair. I was lucky enough to get a good body shop. Luckily my insurance paid the entire bill.

Good luck!

Your insurance company will back you up on the repairs. Contact them if you have insurance and get it fixed right. Paint is no reason to trade in a new vehicle. A good body shop can repaint a vehicle equal to or better than the original factory job.

I feel your pain, (not yet, but sure I will sooner or later).

I would have taken it back to the dealer. They would be able to match the paint and all.

It's just a truck. Correction: It's just a nice looking, best selling, bad A** truck

I take it you were mad when you made this post? Not all body shops are bad you
happened to be one of the unlucky ones. When you go to the body shop ask around
that will help. The lowest price is not always the best.Tell your Insurance Co. They
will get it fixed lots of luck

blitzen,

No, I have not tried it because I only found out about it very recently. I just washed my truck a couple of hours ago and it is still flawless (paintwise).

My wifes' car has a couple of road pecks on the paint and I will be ordering a kit pretty soon. I guess I am waiting for warmer weather actually. I did see a review of the paint repair kit at www.detailcity.com and the people that have used it said it was great. It was in the forums section titled Product discussion and reviews (page 2). There is also a link to a video on the product.

Why did you guys, worried about "wrinkles", excuse me, scratches, buy a TRUCK at all?! If you want to worry and cluck and buy make-up kits, excuse me, "swirl mark remover", why not get a Mini, BMW? Oh, right, then you couldn't pretend to me real men! Use a TRUCK as a TRUCK! Otherwise buy a thong and head to to those placers where you get facials in it!

cause we want our things to look nice. i agree on the truck part mine gets pretty dirty and all but i still dont want it looking all beat up. we have mercedes and a bmw so you want my truck to be leaking oil and rusted next to them just because its american and has a bed? i live the middle of the city but in the past month my truck hauled about 5 tons of concrete, dragged a few cars stuck in snow and carrried 20 teenagers worth of trash to the dump. always washed it up within a week everytime i used it as a truck too.

next you would want us to all go ram our trucks into trees so we can get get some dents and a manly story to tell everyone that our trucks destroyed something.

I have had these problems before, I posted it on the maaco question before, there are a lot of lousy body shops out there, if you have this problem with a body shop turn them into the BBB or better yet the state attorney generals office for fraud I did! The place closed down and the clown went south, May be your guy! Sorry if it is.

We live in a city where a fair percentage of the population thinks nothing of slamming their mini van door into other cars.

I swear by scratch and dent specialists. For as little as $150, you can get a decent specialist to go around your vehicle and make scratches disapear. I expect they use acrylic paint good for only about 5 years or so, but I will say, when they are done, the repair is invisible.

I park way in the back of all parking lots, so I usually don't have to have my vehicles done more than once every three or four years, but it's worth it.

BTW, I purchased my truck to tow an RV with, not to hunt in, so I am not indifferent to surface damage. If I was still hunting, I would have purchased a different vehicle.

Enjoy.
