hey guys, I was driving today and truck started running rough like it wanted to stall, I put in N to keep running, then as I was driving the oil light and low fuel would come on at the same time for few seconds and then go off, no CEL ever came on. When I stopped I would hit power win switch to lower and all lights on dash came on and truck stalled,,,,did this over and over upon me restarting it.........????? my batt were old and I just replaced, seems to start a lot quicker,,,,dont know if this was batt, alt or cps???
Are you saying it did all this weirdness and then you replaced the batteries? If so, they were likely the culprit. Or are you saying it did all this weirdness even though you just replaced the batteries? (If so, maybe they need to be charged up for the first time, rather than making your alternator try to do it.)
sorry, yes it did all of that and i replaced batt.
can batteries cause those problems while driving?
Sure. Assuming you had some load going at the time (headlights, heater fan, etc.) then the batteries were draining farther and farther down as you drove, and the whole truck gets really freaky when the voltage gets that low. Usually you see that kind of thing for the first time when trying to start, because of the extra load of the glow plugs and starter, but it could happen while driving too.
Keep an eye on the alternator too, of course. If it's been trying to recharge old dying batteries, its life could have been shortened. (But not always - just keep an eye out for that.)
thanks for replies!!! I see what ur saying, however, I didnt have any load, no lights, heater/ac, nothing but stock radio, when I hit the power wind switch it stalled!!!! that blew me away!
How did the battery connections look when you replaced the batteries? A bad ground would have somewhat the same effects, but it would have had to have been bad on both batteries (unless the one with the good ground connection was well and truly shot, and you lost the ground connection on your better battery.... or something...)
If it were me, I'd take my alternator in to have it checked out, stock alt should be pushing 140 amps when asked, that is more than enough to run the truck with all lights on heater on high radio going and trying to roll down the window. The motor itself, once started, should only draw around 5 amps to run. Injector are high voltage low current, all the sensors on it don't require much current either.
