I bought a 92 Ranger xlt supercab new. I gave a lot of thought to my needs however the purchase was kind of impulsive. My truck didn't have a Tach and I wished that I had one for 3-4 years. I asked at the dealer once or twice about upgradeing and nobody knew anything. Eventually I picked up an instrument cluster from a 89-94 Ranger or Explorer (w/ 4 small gauges and tach) and bit the bullet to dissassemble my dash. I was able to replace the speedo in my junkyard dash with my own speedo, and plug the harness of the junkyard cluster into the truck and everything worked! It all went together and looked like factory. One day I found that my grill had been cracked like someone tried to tear off the Ford logo, or backed into it with their trailer hitch. I had noticed that some STX Rangers had a blacked out Explorer type grill and wondered whether the chrome Explorer grill would fit. I liked the looks of the Explorer grill much better. I had asked the dealership about interchangability and told that they weren't interchangable. One day at a salvage yard I asked, was given the standard won't work. I asked if the hoods were the same. They were, the fenders, ect. Finally they offered to let me take their counterfit offshore Explorer grill out to eyeball. It looked good and I bought it. I had to go to the dealer and pay 20bucks for the badge in the middle but installation took about 10 min and again looked factory. I sold the truck last year to help finance my 76 F100 restoration. At 90K the only things that went wrong w/ my 3L 5 sp was a broken headlight switch ****, and a 700 dollar breakage of 3rd gear and the slider gear in the Mazda built transmission. I was erratic with maintenence and only took the truck in for a 17,000 mi service. I replaced the serb belt right before I sold the truck and changed the plugs, cap and rotor once. I probably had fuel injectors that needed cleaning as I lost a couple of mpg in the last couple of years. I had great luck with that truck but the yearning for a full sized truck and a V-8 over came me. I'm now rebuilding a 390 and have a 76 f100 and a 69 F100.
