First of all merry christmas everybody. Has anybody had a bad cat on exhaust of truck? The reason I ask is that my truck STINKS. Not diesel smell, but a smell that will burn your eyes if a breeze isn't blowing when you stand next to the exhaust. The closest way I can describe it is if you use ether to start an old 955 loader on a -15 day. sort of. If anybody might know what this is, Thanks in advance. Once again, Happy Holidays.
Johnnyk, Merry X-mas right back at ya. I put the same thread in a couple of weeks ago. Mine is the same way. Stinks bad. Been that way for months. Some of the guys say it the type of cat fords using. But if it's that, then they all should stink, right. As for as the CO crash687 talks about, maybe someone knows where we can get this checked?
When my EBP, exhaust back pressure, sensor was bad causing stumbling idle and cycling engine noise at steady cruising speeds anywhere between 35-70 MPH; would cycle ultra quiet to normal (sounded like surging except tach and speed were steady)..... I had scan tool on truck and the EGR Flow Error was +99.9 %. Awful smell; in fact I could still smell it later on my clothes after I walked into my office!
Basically the truck was recyling and recyling...... its own exhaust far more than normal.
Not saying that is your problem but possibly it is, since these trucks are known for EBP sensor failures. My problem was also intermittant and the dealer did not fix it the first time.
Unfortunately, my AutoXray 6000 scan tool does not display EBP.
bnmccoy....So, was your problem actually fixed with the EBP? I've had 2 EGR, an EBP and the ICP replaced for problems like you were having, but the smell has been there the whole time.
Thanks for the replys. My truck has been like this since it was new. Was not this bad until a couple of weeks ago. I thought when it got really smelly it might have been bad fuel but in that time i have filled up at 4 different gas stations. Its bad enough that my neighbors are complaining. EGR valve was replaced back in augest. Smells like this with EGR unpluged also. We will see what the dealer says on the 4th.

The problems were corrected on my truck; no extremely bad smell once EBP replaced.
My EGR valve is currently leaking exhaust between the valve and the outside of the intake manifold. Evidence is soot in this area and hood. I do have a problem with exhaust smell in cab; hopefully the EGR valve leaking is this problem. My EGR was first thing replaced on engine at about 5,000 miles; the EBP was closer to 10,000 miles; currently at +23,000 miles.
just to let everybody know, Dealer did not address. I just got my truck back on friday. egr valve was replaced because it was "leaking" ? I still have the smell. EBP was not replaced. I talked to the mechanic and I dont think that he even checked for the smell. I was wondering if i took the air filter out and ran it that way for 20 miles would it hurt the motor? The reason I ask is that somebody said that it smeled like it was getting too much fuel/not enough air. I also still have the fomous oil leak at the bell housing. Idont think the mechanic even looked at that. Could it still be leaking assembly lube after 23,750 miles? Thanks in advance for the ideas.
My truck has the smell only on cold morning start ups. I do know that CO is an oderless gas. EGR disconnection doesn't seem to affect the smell either.
I had the engine and transmission computers reprogrammed in November 2004 at 34,000 miles. Reprogramming cured rough running at startup and extremely rough shifting to low gear in tow/haul mode. At the same time they performed the battery cable recall. BUT!!! Now there is eye watering exhaust smell inside as well as outside the cab. Prior to the reprogramming there was no exhaust odor unless you stuck you face in the tail pipe. Would the mechanic have disassembled anything and not put parts back together properly that would cause this symptom???? The smell is bad even after engine is warm going down the highway.
Please comment ASAP
Thanks
