How do I replace the gear shift **** on my 98 Ranger?

I just bought a ford ranger 98 and I want to switch out the shift **** to something that better fits my personality but the problem is, I don't know how to take the factory one off. Someone help me out.

The stock **** is held in place by splines and glue. To remove it, just pull it off. It may take alot of effort.

Since I really wasn't planning on keeping the one on my 2000, I waited for a nice cold day, took a big flat screwdriver, put it right on the top and whacked it with a hammer. Split right in 2, and came off real easy...
