Gouges in cylinder

Gouges in cylinder
I have a 302 block with some gouges in the #1 cylinder wall. Is there a way to tell if the block is any good w/o bringing it to the engine shop? My thinking is that, I'd only want a block with a .030 overbore, which means that on one side of the cylinder, I've got .015 to work with, and the scratches need to be less than .015". I have a feeling they're deeper than that...but I'm not sure. So is there a way to find out, or do ya just bore it and see what the deal is...

I'd say take it the the engine shop, have them look at it. I rebuild engines myself and most of the time can look at grooves and tell if it will clean up with a rebore or if it needs to be sleeved. But this is because I have been machining engines for 10 years. People are always worried about sleeving blocks, but if it's done correctly the engine will last as long as original. I have put many sleeves in and have never had a problem.
