It's very cold here in Chicago. It's also my first winter with the Diesel. Ever since the cold weather the truck idle jumps up on cold start ups. If I tap the gas pedal the rpms go back to normal. This will happen a couple times and than it's OK. The truck runs great once warmed up. Is this normal?
Yes this is normal. Cold air package idles the truck up when engine oil and ambient temperature are cool enough. Also the Exhaust BackPressure Valve (EBPV) will engage and you'll hear a completely different exhaust note. All of this is to help the engine warm a little faster.
The higher idle is also supposed to help against wetstacking from idling too long. Normally you shouldn't have to let your truck idle up in the morning for much time at all. It was 15 degrees here this morning, and my truck sat idling for about 2 minutes before I pulled out. Just take it easy until the temp gauge starts rising closer to normal operating temps.
Thanks, so idle for about 2 minutes and than take it easy?
Yes, the deisel clatter will be louder when cold, so just be gentle on the throttle. But it certainly doesn't hurt it. It will warm up much faster if you are working the engine rather than sitting there idling.
