Hi how is everyone doing? anyways i just have a quick question and want your oppinion..... i currently have a 97 psd w/ stock exhuast and stock downpipe..... I have an appointment on the 29th to have a stright dual exhuast set up by one of my buddies, and i was wondering if it's even worth doing with the stock DP? should i wait to get a DP? or get the exhuast.... then try and put it in there w/ the dual exhuast?? guess this is just a recomendation question.... i'm not sure where he plans on starting the new system, (cutting the cat, so it's going to be infront there somewhere).... i would invision that he would leave or install a new flange where the cat bolts up.... so maby i can bolt a new DP on at a later date directly to that flange..... does the DP weld up, or is there a flange on the lower end?? thanks in advance.....happy holidays...... - Robbgt
EDIT: Guess it does have a flange on it.....Also if you recomend a DP, i would rather not have to bash my firewall w/ a sledge hammer to get it to fit.... what would be a low cost 2 piece DP.... that i don't have to hurt my truck to fit in? thanks
My 3 inch DP was like $300 installed. They used a plasma cutter to remove the SS old pancake one. The DP is where you really want to make the change/upgrade. Do that first as it is the most restricting part of the exhaust!
Oh, and the new DP is a 2 piece unit that clamps up. Easy to install. I would have done it myself if I had the plasma cutter to cut out the old DP, which is a one piece unit installed when the whole engine was put in at the factory. To remove it as one piece you have to pull the motor, thus the plasma cutter, to make it 2 pieces!

thanks a bunch.... I'm pretty handy with a sawzall..... so i might give it a wirl myself.... also what DP would you reccomend? i would rather not get one that requires me to introduce my firewall to a sledge hammer if i can help it... thanks again
The 3 inch one I have is round and 2 piece and no firewall mods needed. I don't expect anyone sells one that you need to mod the FW. But just ask the question. Good luck with a sawzall as the pancake DP piece is stainless steel and will chew up and spit out most blades I expect. Tha plasma cutter made quick work. Maybe you can rent one. All you need is a compressor with it to make it go...
$130 for a 3" two piece downpipe. will be my christmas present to myself. I wouldn't hold off on the exhaust if you don't have the downpipe yet. since you already have the appointment, and make sure you CHOP THE CAT!!!! it is the BEST exhaust upgrade you can do, the downpipe will realy help out once you have a programer and realy need the good exhaust flow.
I also have a 97,I went with a one piece dp from Banks(3.5")I did it myself, the hardest part was removal of the old dp,I used a sawzall and made three seperate cuts.
Hypermax makes a downpipe that starts out at 3", expands to 3.5" once it clears the firewall, and expands to 4" once it clears the transmission. That's the best option IMO unless you want to do some major banging on the firewall.
I put a 3" on my 96. I used a sawsall to remove the stock one. I had no problems what so ever. Made one cut as far down the cobra head as possible.( as far as the blade would throw) cut through it like nothing. Bought a porta-power set up to bend the firewall back. It's actually the floor board just below the seam. You can't even tell I bent it inside. And I bent it back alot. But the duck bill with the porta power was worth it's weight in gold for that job. Took me about two minutes to bend what I needed to. No pounding. Search google "Powerstroke downpipe install". There is a guy in there that has a pretty detailed write up on it. Hope that helps.
