Code Scanning

I have a 1994 Ranger 4.0 V6 with auto trans. Does anyone know how to get any available error codes from the engine computer manually. I did it a long time ago but forgot how. It seems to me I shorted two pins together on the "test connector" and placed a volt meter between the positive terminal of the battery and another pin in the "test connector". The code was a series of voltage pulses to the meter. I am having a serious pinging problem and suspect a sensor gone bad.

I went to Sears and spent $36 for a simple scanner. A light flashes and it beeps. The manual that comes with it is worth its weight in gold. My problem turned out to by one of my oxygen sensors. The code was clearly there.
