PO781 code on the R400 transmission

So I was driving along last night on a 40 mile an hour road and the OD light starts flashing. I stopped and checked the fluid and it was normal on all accounts, looked under the truck and all appeared normal also. I started driving again and noticed the shifts from first to second and second to third were going in alot harder. I do have the tugger shift kit in it but the shifts were twice as hard now. I finall got out on a 4 lane highway and now noticed the tranny would not shift into overdrive. I was doing 55 and the tach was up around 2000 rpms. After a couple miles of me pushing the overdrive button it did finally drop down to normal rpms so I am not sure if when I was pushing the button before while on the slow road it was taken out of overdrive, I couldn't tell because the light was flashing.

I got the truck home after having to drive it for about 14 miles and backed it into the garage all while the OD light was still flashing. Did not feel or notice anything else wrong with the tranny and shifting felt normal again.

I left the truck sit for about an hour while I got on FTE to investigate what others were finding and got ahold of BigPoppa to get his imput and to borrow his code scanner.

We decided to meet up the road which was a 34 mile drive for me. During the drive I noticed all normal conditions while driving and the light did not come back on and hasn't came on since, after aprox 100 miles of driving.

Met up with BigPoppa and his scanner showed 2 codes. First was a PO460, fuel tank level Indicator circut error, which may explain why my fuel guage dosn't work right and a PO781 code which is 1 to 2 shift error.

I have read many many posts on here about trannys and the PO781 code but unfortunately nobody really follows up on what they had to do to fix the issue. Some say flush the system others say get ready for a new tranny but I haven't seen much on what the final outcome was with guys.

Anybody have any say on the final outcome of this problem?

A little history on my tranny, I did have to replace the torque converter and installed a new 32 row cooler about 5000 miles ago.

Thanks for any imput!!!

Special thanks to Mike, AKA BigPoppa, for coming out on such a cold and snowy night to help a brother in need!!! FTE ROCKS!!!!

Had the same codes. My trans. fluid smelled burnt. Talk to BTS and he said to try and flush the fluid. Truck ran fine for about five miles. Then started to do the same thing all over again. So I found a guy that built my buddies 6.4 transmission and he built mine.

Ouch, 5 miles! Well I have made it past that and will (hopefully) be putting 350 miles on it tomorrow. It seems that when people have gotten this code it ranges from nothing evident to replacing the tranny. I hope I am on the nothing side!!

Thanks for the reply!!

My suggestion is to clear the code and see if it comes back. Once in a while this code will set when nothing is wrong.
