53-56 Innner Fender ???

Before I go hacking up my inner fenders. Dont remember how they fit versus the old front end and no headers. I know the bolt locations and know how the should fit. But I have a Mustang II front end, 460, and Headers. Can anyone give me and idea on how much I have to cut away to clear A Arms and Headers????

Thanks,
Patrick

You pretty much have to trial and error the installation, marking what to cut each time and then holding the apron in place to see if you cut enough. I used masking tape to mark the cut lines and and after trimming installed duct tape on the rough edges for a trial fit. It will take several trials for the first apron, but the second apron is normally almost a mirror image of the first apron. I have heard of using big tin snips, but I prefer a good air cut off wheel.

I cut the middle "bubbled" portion completely off and added a straight peice of metal, notched to give the control arm adequate clearance.I also cut off the bottom edge so that it sits about 1" off the frame rails. Now I'll add a rubber skirting to the bottom to make a tight seal.It comes down even with the outer portion of the frame rail so 460 header clearance is not a problem.

If you leave about 3/16" to 1/4" extra, you can then use the flanger available from eastwood to produce a very nice looking edge that won't vibrate and keeps it's shape. A friend did this to his 55, but has since bought a bead roller and I will try this on my inners. Saw on a 56 last summer and it looks/works great. Both ways look like it was made that way from factory and a nice touch.
