89 fuel pump? trouble starting
2.9 injection. After sitting for a few hours the truck won't start right up. If I pump some gas into it before I start it, it will turn over, but it will shut off as soon as I hit the gas pedal. The only way I can get it started is to hold the gas pedal down while I'm starting it and hold it down for a while after it is started. I'm a girl away from home and need to get this taken care of - don't need a mechanic ripping me off. Thanks.

are you certain it's a fuel problem? try turning the key to the on position and listen for the fuel pump initial startup. you can also depress the schraeder valve on the fuel rail (engine off, after turning key to run position) i can help you pinpoint this and save $$$$$$$$$$ OVALADOAZUL@HOME.COM

ok, here we go. the schrader valve is a "port" to help gauge pressure, diagnosis, or to relieve pressure for repair. the valve is similar in design to the ones on your tires. the valve should be on the fuel rail, metal tubes that provide pressurized fuel to the injectors, in turn the injectors pulse and send a designated amount of fuel to the combustion chambers. DO NOT PRESS VALVE WITH ENGINE RUNNING. you should be able to identify the spark plugs, injectors, and fuel rail by backtracking from the head(s). the fuel rail should be shiny regardless of how clean the engine is, don't know why, just happens that way. if you have problems identifying components look in a decent manual or drive the truck to a parts house and ask a clerk or salesman. if you have more questions i will continue to try and help you. good luck and be cautious.
