I have a 97 ranger 2.3L, 5spd man. with 144,xxx mi. on it. It has never had a problem, 'til now, I changed the plugs and wires, and took it for a 100+ mi. (round-trip) run. On the way back, it acted like it would if the fuel lines were clogged or maybe an EGR valve prob. I recently changed the fuel filter too. Any ideas what this "stutter" is? Also, at idle and lower gears(when warm) it has a slight tick sound, not very loud or bad, but there. It sounds like...rd rd rd ...tick tick tick and repeats this. Anyone know what It might be? Let me know, thank you!
Thanks, I was also suspecting the catalytic converter also. I know it needs changed out big time. It kinda feels like when you're pulling someone and they have to do the initial braking and you feel that little "tug" per say. I've owned the truck for a little over 2 years, and everything is stock on it, if it's been changed, it's cause I've done it. I'll definately check the fuel pressure and post the outcome of this problem.
If you suspect a clogged cat put a vacuum gauge on the intake, bring it up to 2000-2500 rpm for a few minutes, if the vacuum drops then the cat MIGHT be clogged.
Ok, the problem is solved. I turned over the engine to warm it up, popped the hood and pinpointed the tick noise. Apparently, due to the 3rd plug being harder to access (directly behind intake manifold) & the fact it was just past dusk and cold (poor visibility/frozen hands) it was not tightened all the way. In the event, killing the new plug put in there and causing all the mayhem. I put one of the old plugs back in to run out get a relacement, even running cold, there is no stutter or hesitating at all. She's back to her old self again. Thank You very much for all the input I really appreciate all the help.
