What Makes the 6.0 Quieter

Anyone know why the new diesels are quieter? Seems that all the newer rigs are much quiter than than their predecessors. I'd have to say thats my only standing complaint about my 99 psd. The turbo whistle will deafen you after 8 hours of pulling and the decibel level in the cab is pretty high.

Man, I love all the sweet music my 7.3 makes. There's nothing like pulling up along a lowered, bass booming, import and stalling up my truck with the tailpipe even with his open window.

Guess I'm gettin old. I like the power and probably won't mind the pipes when I mod them but after eight or ten hours, I can't hear anymore.

I'll agree, after pulling for a period of time the 7.3L with the screaming turbo can get old. But I have no complaints of how well it pulls.
I think it is a split shot injection system that makes them quieter. I know the new cummins have them, and they are just as quiet. Along with better insulation between the engine and cab.

wlihnter- do you pull a load when you're travelling? I have no problem with the sound, I love listening to the engine purr when I'm travelling unloaded. I love it as well when it's loaded and listen to the turbo just screamin. But after a number hours it can go old. I also think that after '99, they improved the insulation between the engine and cab. At work they have an '02, and I can tell it is noticably quieter in the cab than my '99.

a major cause for the reduced sound is the fuel system, by changing the timing the sound is reduced

The 6.0 has 8 mice instead of 8 rats like the 7.3

The engine uses pilot injection to quiet down the combustion cycle and it has a laminated oil pan (two sheet of metal with sound dampening material between)

ahh yes, but have you heard a straight piped 6.0, their turbo sings way more than our 7.3's do, even at idle the 6.0 whistles way more

Just don't seem right somehow.... if it ain't a-clatterin', then it ain't a diesel!
I love getting back with all the fastfood drive up windows. We've been trying to figure out what they're sayin' all these years, now they get to ask me "Huh?".

That singing comes via the variable pitch variable vane turbo

LOL, you guy's are riot!

After the comments about the timing and turbo speeds, I decided to do a little test. I removed my superchip for a trip to Utah. Large difference in the noise. Also large difference in the power. Put it back in quickly!

I used to drive a 2000 F250 for work. It was quieter than my 99. As far as I know it was the same engine and tune, but it had lees turbo whistle than mine. Seems like I read something at Banks that was insinuating that the early 99 turbos have different design than the rest. Anyone heard about that?

I have heard that the early 99 turbo was smaller and for that reason, those trucks don't experience surge/stall when chipped. Or at least, the openings or the impeller were smaller.
