Looking for info on 1956 F100

just bought this pickup last week, have looked all over enginebut cant find id tag.was wondering what is the original engine size or model fitted to 1956 f100.It is an original rhd and wondering is it unusual for f100 to be rhd. I think its the only one in ireland "if any one knows where ireland is" so the old boythat sold it said.

Hey Declan... welcome. It's really unusual here in west Texas to find a rhd truck. I think that would hold true for most of the other places represented here on the board. If you have a tag on your glovebox door, some kind soul here will help you with it... engine, color, where it was built etc. On V-8 engines there are cast numbers on the block just above the oil pump.

My Grandma was from Louisburg, County Mayo. She was an O'Malley, just in case we are related. Nice to have you on board! cordially, himmelberg

Declan,
The ID tag should be on the jam of the driver's side door and begins with the vehicle identification number (VIN#). The VIN# should also be listed somewhere on your registration, ownership title, or tax documents (not sure what you have over there!).

The VIN# will be something like: F10D6R-23826

"F" stands for "F series truck",
"10" means a 1/2 ton F-100
"D" is the engine code, in this case a 223 cu inch straight six (yours may be different, I think 272 and 292 Y-block 8 cylinders were the other optional engines available that year, but I don't know the codes for them)
"6" is the model year, 1956
"R" is the assembly plant code, in this case for San Jose, California
"23826" is the consecutive unit number this truck held going down the assembly line for that model year.

Maybe somebody can chime in with the Y block codes. Welcome to FTE!

Cheers,
ROB

I'd like to see a picture of that truck, too!

And looking at my dusty old truck rating plate sheet, engine codes were as follow:
D - OHV 6 cyl 223 cu. in.
V - OHV 8 cyl - 2V carb (L/D) 272 cu. in.
Z - OHV 8 cyl - 2V carb (H/D) 272 cu. in.
R - OHV 8 cyl - 4V carb (H/D) 272 cu. in.

...no 292 in trucks in 56.

I have an original photographed copy of the complete 1956-57 truck rating plate code for series 100-600. If any of you guys want a nice big readable copy, email me.

I thought the same thing based on the possible data plate codes. My truck originally had the 223. The Y block was added later, and I've tried to research which one it is (239/272/292/312) and what year it was built. It is an ECZ-A casting, which John Mummert's Y-block site lists as either a 292 or a 312 dating from 1956. I'm not sure if this means the engine was manufactured in 56 for the 57 model year.
Here are the clues that make me think my engine is 1956. I've got ECZ-B casting heads, which are 4 barrel and equipped both the 292 and the 312. Again Mummert lists these heads as 1956. My intake manifold is a four barrel/small diameter ECZ-A casting, topped with a Carter WCFB four barrel carb. The 1957 engines and later had the larger diameter intakes that can accept the modern aftermarket carbs as a bolt-in. Mine cannot. And unfortunately I've got a Load-o-matic distributer without centrifugal advance, which is definitely pre-1957.
Here's the link to check out his site: http://www.ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm
I'm still confused why the data plates only list the 223 or 272 as options for 1956. That being said, it's possible that my engine was built up with whatever Y-block junk the engine shop had laying around in 1973 when it was installed...and that all the clues add up to nothing.

Declan, sorry I've taken the thread off on a tangent, but hopefully you'll find John Mummert's Ford-Y-block.com website useful.

Hi Declan

welcome to the FTE
I have a RHD 54 and live in West London
These trucks were not sold in Europe so must have been imported, if it is a original RHD I believe it will have been assembled in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa (which is where I got mine from) I have only seen 1 other RHD and that was converted from LHD

The 56 trucks with a big back window are rare so you have something special, looks to be in great shape too

My Dad is from Kildare, my Mother is from Donegal, I was born in County Cricklewood which makes me a plastic Paddy

I've learned a lot from the guys on this board over the last few years, Its a entertaining place to hang out

From your engine pic, it's definitely a Y block, but that's about the extent of what I can tell just looking at it. Y block sizes were 239, 272, 292, and 312 cubic inches and they were only produced until 1964.

Truck looks great!
