Rod Knock @ 140K miles

I have a 2000 F350 4x4 with a V10 and it has developed a rod knock. It has spent most of its 140K towing 8500, 9000 lbs long distances over hills all over the country in everything from -10 to 110 degrees. What I'm wondering is are there even spare parts out there for this thing? I'm sure it will need as crank and a new rod. I'm figuring it's just going to make more sense to buy a new short block or long block. I have a feeling this isn't going to be an inexpensive project. The rod knock was a stupid stupid mistake on my part. It ran low on oil (really low), lost oil pressure and that was it. I have been told the V10 doesn't last very long past 140-150K anyhow is this true? My F350 has been like a Honda Accord as far as relability. In 140K miles it's had one water leak fixed under warranty, and a fuel pump go bad at 135K miles. I put brakes on it at 95K in the rear and 98K in the front and changed the oil every 3-5K miles. I have trouble believeing the motor wouldn't have gone another 60K if it wasn't for me.

As far as I know Ford only offers a along block for the V10 and its about $4000.00. I'm sure that there are parts for these things by now, but if you are planning on keeping the truck I would go with the long block and the warranty.

Sounds like you've got your money out of your motor. I'd definitely get a long block from Ford, and get the warranty. I've heard of lots of V-10's going over 200K, but you definitely could call your use 'severe duty'. Good luck with what you do, keep us posted as to what you did, and all the details, Ken

A search of the local bone yards may turn up a fairly low mile motor. Swap it out and even if it only lasts 40 or 50K, it may be time for a new workhorse anyway.

I need to make a decision quickly. I have put over 2000 miles on it knocking, about 300 or 400 of them towing about 4000 lbs only because I had no choice. The truck has been like a loyal friend refusing to let me down regarless of what I ask of it. I guess that is what makes a good truck. I realize it's going to window the block soon because the knock is getting worse. I hope I can find something for less than 4K though.

I'd like to get another 5 years and 100K miles out of the truck. The light duty 1990 3/4 ton GMC the Ford replaced had 250K on it and it's 2nd motor (just because it had worn out at 190K). That truck was doing close to the same work load after itand it just killed it. It ate brakes and trannys like no tomorrow which is the reason for the one ton now. You can't tow 8500 pounds with a truck rated for 7500 even when you only think you're towing 7500. oops. Especially when that truck hs a 700R4.

There are low mile V-10's around, if I remember you have a 2000 which has the higher hp motor, so a swap should be easy with a 2000 thru 2004. Every wrecking yard has a hotline they can use, but normally they're so lazy they won't do it unless you ask them to. I know of several people who have bought V-10 Fords from Foster Auto Parts here in Portland Oregon, it's just timing if and when they have them in stock. And then there's always online auction sites, just be EXTREMELY careful with that. Don't send money to anyone oversea obviously. Southwest Airlines has tickets to just about anywhere in the nation for $100-ish. A flight to check out a motor might prove frugal. Of course you have to weigh the expense of installation of a used engine against the cost of having a new one installed. But it sounds to me like your truck is still very nice with the exception of a bad rod/main bearing. I'd put a new heart in the old girl and drive on ! Good luck, Ken

why not try replacing the rod and main bearings ,maybe you can do it to it while the engine is still in it, I have done a few trucks like that

Once I get some time I'll pull the pan off and look at it. I have a feeling it's beyond that stage. I have a feeling the crank is going to be scored pretty bad.
