Cool 93 Ranger poor gas mileage

Lately, I've been getting very poor gas mileage out of my Ranger, something to the tune of 15 mpg. The engine is stock except for a K&N conical air filter, 110k miles on it... just wondering if you guys knew of any common problems that Rangers experience at this age that may contribute to this. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

I too am having this problem

I also seem to notice that my acceleration (not that it was great starting off..being a 4-Cyl/Auto) has gotten much worse.

I'm sort of in the same boat with my 92. Although I do have a 6 in it instead of your 4's. I've been tracking my mileage for around a year now and when I drive it nice (don't tear up the asphalt) it seems to get around 15mpg, about 6.5Km/L for my fellow Canucks. Once my mileage was doing REALLY bad and actually got down to around 3-5mpg. I'm not sure if this will apply to your problems, but I had just got new exhaust put on by a company. It turned out that they did something funny when welding was done and the O2 sensor actually got damaged. So I put in a new one and it helped out a bit. But the real problem was the fuel pressure regulator. It was letting into the engine I think around 75psi, when it should have been around 30psi (think those are close to the right numbers??). Once that was changed it went right back to normal. I didn't even see any more power with more fuel, guess it's because I still have stock intake (but not for long) and without more air, nothing changed. Hopefully this helped you both out a bit, but I'm no expert or anything.

I also have a V6, 3.0L, and I regularly use 89-octane fuel. I'm not sure where my problem lies, but I'll probably be taking things apart soon and giving them a good cleaning, starting with my air filter. When I first put it on earlier this year, I checked my mileage to be about 20 mpg. Not too bad, I didn't think. I changed the plugs and transmission fluid this summer... so it could just be that things need to be cleaned up a bit.

try cleaning your TB and intake manifold. they can get carbon buildup over time and that can cause performance problems and thus bad mileage. good luck!

Hi felixdacat76,
i saw that you mentioned that you have a K&N conical air filter, which means you replaced the stock intake.i'm looking to replace mine too. can you tell me where did you get yours?(website?store?) and did you noticed any improvement in your truck?
thanks.
