Hi everyone i need some help trying to figure this oil pressure problem, i have a 73 f100 sb with a 70 460 this motor has ported dove heads crane roller rockers basically a stock bottom end hvlp oil pump front sump pan mild cam 750 holley 2500 stall convertor 390 posi rearend. Under hard acceleration the engine lost oil pressure guage needle was bouncing and motor was ticking.shut truck off for several minutes cranked back everything was ok after that. Took truck out for its first drive over 25 miles 1 way and about half way there at about 3000 rpm in drive and cruising oil pressure started bouncing again so i slowed down to about 50 which is about 2600 rpms and it seemed to settle down. Talked to a couple of guys about this and im being told the pump is emptying the oil pan at those rpms if this is true what do i do ? rear sump pan w/ extra capacity or change pump any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. chuck
Your friends advice sounds on the money. Personally, since you already have the H/V pump, keep it and go with the new pan. Don't forget to extend the pickup tube to match your deep pan or you will be right back where you started. Good luck.
I agree with above as well, but you may also want to think about adding a windage tray (keeps the oil from slogging in the pan and can add about 15HP) while yer down there! Could be anything from a clogged pick up tube to what was mentioned above. If yer gonna go deep sump, do it right and go rear feed with the windage tray friend.
Larger capacity pan and the windage tray are good ideas, but your real problem is retaining to much oil up in the heads and block and not getting back into the pan. Opening up the drain hole in the heads and block would help the most. This is why a H/V pump isn't a good idea on a street engine.
Thanks for the reply guys any ideas on where i can get the parts for this is this something i can get from a salvage yard or a specific year that i could order from the dealer thanks for your help chuck
No help on the parts for that rear sump oil pan , pick up tube and windage tray. for the 73 f100 w/460 ? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance. chuck
The cheapest and fastest solution would be a switch to a standard volume pump. It will supply plenty of oil for a mild streeter, will free up a couple of HP, and won't suck the pan dry.
It could also be a pickup that's too close to the bottom of the pan, which is slowly starving the pump for oil. Or some trash in the pickup screen.
If the oil pump is your problem, then Brad is correct on the cheapest solution.
I have talked to a tec. guy with melling and he said that I did not need a high volume oil pump for any application unless I was running external eq. such as relocated oil filters, oil coolers, ect., this was even after I told him that I raced and that the life of my engine was above 6500 rpm and that it was a big block. So if anyone wants to debate that please call Melling. I had a freind that said his pick up for his high volume pump was so close to the bottom of his pan that at high rpms it was sucking the pickup against the bottom causing lost oil pressure.(?)
