96 OBD II not interfacing?

Ok, I just got this 96 Bronco with ABS trouble. I took the truck in for a MA Inspection sticker. The guy told me the OBD II connection in the cab isn't working, then did the emmisions test the old fashion way. It passed the test with no problems. The truck runs awsome, transmission seems to shift correctly, instrument panel seems to work also. So I went to use the paper clip trick to try to get the abs light to flash the codes, but nothing happend (ie the light just stays on).

Any thoughts.

Pat

Still love the truck

Yeah the '96 has to be read with a special code reader that will read ABS malfunctions codes, not even your typical $100 code reader will do it. Call around to a local AutoZone or PepBoys and see if they have the Ford ABS code reader, they'll usually do it for free. Other than that you'll have to take it to the dealer or an indy brake shop. But make sure they have the ABS code reader before you go down there. An OTC code reader will run you about $750 to read the ABS codes. There's some software and kit from a company called ScanTool that might read the ABS codes, I'll have to check. I have it but can't remember if it reads ABS or not.

Ok, some clarification need to be done here… In 1996 ALL broncos were OBD-II (which we already knew), however nothing changed with the ABS system. The ABS still had a completely separate connector in 1996, and can still be read with a paper clip. Now the newer vehicles, like my current truck, the ABS is integrated into the OBD-II connecter and you need a multi-million dollar gizma-tron just to get the dang codes… As for getting no response (flashes), the ABS light will also stay on continuously when the ABS computer has no power. So start by checking fuses, etc to make sure the ABS system is getting power.

ABS connector...

Clarification

So it looks like I've got two problems, O'kay, I'd rather deal with the ABS seperately.

Just to be sure I've got the paper clip trick correct, I'm jumping the right top and bottom left connectors looking at the two connectors on the top.

What might be the cause of the OBDII connector failure in the cab?

Holding the connector with the longest side facing down, looks kinda like a pyramid, jump the pin farthest to the left on the bottom row with the pin farthest to the right on the top row.

Did you stick a paper clip into the OBD-II connector? You may have pushed some pins out. Otherwise it's probably just a messed up wire somewher. I would have someone else hook up a scanner to it first.... maybe the emission testers scanner had an off day.

Connector Fine

I checked the connector, and it's fine. I clipped the connector, but still get a solid abs light. I've check the cab fuses, and they're all fine. Where else should I look?

Check the ABS relay. The way the relay works is when it's in a de-energized state it sends power to the ABS light causing it to glow continuously, but when it's in an energized state it switches the power over to the computer. If the relay is broken or not getting power the computer will not get power and the light will stay on. Try switching it out with another none essential relay near by.

WB, check your fuse box. The fuse for your cigarette lighter also provides the 12V source for the OBDII jack under the dash. Fairly common problem. Wife is CT Emissions Specialist, sees this problem on Fords all the time. All devices that are designed to plug into the OBDII jack use this 12V as a power interface. If the fuse is blown the reader cannot communicate with your rig.
