Unhappy Cold Weather Starting

I have a 2000 F-250 Diesel and recently have ran into a problem with starting it when it is 40 degrees or below. Used to start first try everytime. I am still waiting for the wait to start light to go out. It takes me 2 or 3 times to get it to start now when it is chilly out side and when it starts an excessive amount of white smoke comes out of the exhaust. Once it is running it is fine. Is there a recall or something on this? I looked in the recall notices and could find nothing.

What rmilchman said. You're glow plug system has a failure somewhere. Easily diagnosed and repaired.
