1993 f150 axle hop of death....

Hey I got a problem with my differential the diff on my truck hops like a crazy. Only when I try to do a burnout. it doesnt even burnout. I hops like a bitch, it slips and grips hops, and slips grips and hops again, constantly sends a driveline pounding noise through the whole truck. I replaced the shocks, the truck has a manual trans, but its the suspension thats doing it, its too easy to have jumping or something, cant explain to easily, all you guys probably know what im talking about but why is it doing it? kinda annoying when i wanna burnout. I want it to stop so its solid again, I might add it did it with bald and grippy tires. so it aint the tires.

Since trucks arn't setup or designed to do burnouts theres prolly nothing wrong with your differential. What happens when you try to do a burn out is that it the torque from the differential tries to move upward and loads up the leaf springs. Then the leaf springs push back down. This caused your wheel hop. You need traction bars or ladder bars to keep the rear axle from trying to move upward under the torque. I get axle hop in my 95 F150 when its wet outside and I lose traction under acceleration.

is it ever bad, man ive never seen any vehicle do it so bad. Like Ive tried to do burnouts before and have been successful at doing it but revving it high to 4000 and dropping it to overcome the hop. but other times, like even accelerating, I get the axle hop. Can this do any damage to the drive line, seems like it jams the driveshaft pretty hard when it hops. slam slam slam slam,

Just wondering, why are you trying to do burnouts? Im not sure of your age, but im young as well, 22 to be exact. I did a burnout one time about 3 years ago in my 95 F150. I then relized that all of that is just extra wear and tear on my truck. Plus im sure your truck had the M5OD which isn't the strongest. Wait til the clutch breaks or you destroy the trans. You'll be wishing you never tried a burnout.

i'll assume you have the M5OD since it's a manual. not the best idea to do burnouts with that cobbled POS. sell the truck and by a pony car(a mustang perhaps) if you want to do burnouts. an unloaded truck is gonna hop like girl skippin rope, just the nature of the truck.

The rear spring will buckle under the load, and it will jump when the tension is relieved, etc. JC Withney sells a helper spring that will supposed to prevent this. Go browse the suspension section. (I saw it yesterday)

thanks guys for the reply, I wont be trying any of that anymore anytime soon. I never thought of buddies trucks clutch breaking and then his input shaft. well that was a ZF trans, but none the less the trans was the weakest link. I was just curious as to why it does that? I know now, Thanks for the input, By the way I am 22 as well. And also I do own a Mustang as well. A 1988 with a 5.0 does the burnout like a mad horse in heat. Love the goods. Thanks guys your all awesome.

I had the same problem with my 95. A buddy gave me a set of traction bars from a 95 Lightning ... no more problem.

Squiggy, the guys are right. Doing burnouts in your '93 isn't good for it. I used to try and burn out in my '94 but it'd hop too much to have any fun. So, I stopped trying before anything broke. Anyway, those Traction Springs really work! And they don't affect the ride! Easy install too. You'd need the 3" for your truck. Then you could burn out without tearing anything out. I'm sold on the things! $70 in JCWhitney.
