rear axle pinion nut torque
i am posting this for a freind who has a 88 ranger. he got the truck for free from a army guy getting shipped to germany for 3 years. anyways the truck had a busted rear carrier and so far we have replaced the ring, pinion, carrier, spider gears, and pinion bearings. my question is what is the torgue on the pinion nut?????? we installed the new crush sleeve on the pinion and we donwant to torque it down too far. his repair manual says to measure the pre load on the pinion nut prior to taking it off. and to , while tightening/torqueing,apply the same preload to the nut. we took it appart not nowing we needed to measure the preload. so what is the preload on the pinion nut sopposed to be set at?????

Rotational torque on old bearings should be between 8-14 in. lbs. and for a new bearing, 16-29 in. lbs. Pinion nut is 170 ft.lbs., but you have to torque in increments to avoid overloading the pinion bearing. The amount of collapse on the spacer is very small (i.e. 0.08 in) so the pinion bearing load will increase very quickly, thus the need to check rotational torque frequently. (For 7.5", but the 8.8" uses similar ranges)
