vaccum pump
A couple quick questions. On a 96 350, my brake light occasionally comes on for a while on a cold start up. There is no problem with the brakes. The defroster also has problems deciding where to blow air.(floor, defrost, vent, etc.) After a few minutes, the air control works fine and the brake light goes out. Is my vaccum pump going out? Thanks.

Could be just a leak somewhere. Check the hoses and vacuum cannister first. It may have to build up the vacuum enough to turn out the light because of the leak. You can check the pump with a vacuum gauge. I not sure what it should read (mine is electric), but I believe over 17" is good. The gauge should hold steady after turning off the engine, if the diaphragm in the vac pump is good.

sounds like it might be going. if your truck is 4x4 does it have automatic hubs? id get a hand vacuum pump and check the brake booster and rest of the vac lines. could be the ebv causeing the leak if it does it when its cold. you could try pulling the vac line off the valve and plug it and see if it still does it also. when my vac pump went it sounded like a hoot owl on speed
