Engine noise for the 05 F150 5.4
#16
First I am not the one complaining, my 150 is fine. The consensus was the injectors are making the noise. Secondly, the dieseling would be more of the piston skirts hitting the cylinder walls, or piston tolerances are on the low side, nothing to do with the combustion chamber.
In fact Ford in 2004 increased the piston skirt size on the 5.4 to keep this all from happening.
Want to hear some piston noises go stand by a GM product.
I doubt there is a problem.

I too believe that the "problem" that we are discussing is not a problem at all, but normal operation of the fuel injectors. I believe that since the overall motor is SOOOOOO quiet, we are hearing things that we have NEVER been ABLE to hear before!
Here is a good way for amature mechanics to diagnose the problem. Get a wooden dowel about 3 feet long and place one end near your ear. Take the other end and place it ON various componets on your motor until you hear the noise you are describing. Then work your way in a circle around the area where you hear the noise to make sure that it is not from some other component. I bet you will find 8 fuel injectors that are all making the same racket.
Mechanics have been doing this for years to find problems. If you don;t have a stethescope handy, this is the next best thing. Remember, watch out for the belts and fan blade. OUCH.

My truck has a fast ticking sound that you can hear when the hood is open which I assume is the injectors. After driving it a little and opening the hood you can hear a knocking sound that makes it sound like a diesel. The knocking sound is new, could this be dues to a lack of oil? I had the dealership change the oil Friday afternoon. I will check the oil level after while and look at the ticket to see how much oil they put in it.

I have the sound in question and believe it to be normal. I know what injectors sound like and it not them, I can isolate the injectors from the sound in question. I have had my oil sent in to be analysed and is shows no abnormality. A little high on the silica but was told thats normal, and from the casting process. This was at 10K and I have had the sound from the time I drove it off the lot. I traded a GM with the 8.1 vortec and this sound does resemble the GM piston slap, just not as pronounced. I will probably try a different oil meeting the Fors specifications because the analysis said the oil did not meet the specs for 5W-20 oil, it was light. I am using Fords 5W20 blend oil.

Just got out from underneath my truck. Now I really don't think its the engine. I think its the exaust system. I don't have a clue yet but I would guess the honeycomb in the Cat may have come loose and is making noise. The sound comes from underneath and aft of the engine, not the engine compartment. I was suspicious of the transmission because my Allison made noise that took getting used to but it changed when you shifted into gear this doesn't. I'm going to check the exaust when the truck is cold.

I did the same thing. I came to the same conclusion ;its the cats.
I took a pc of broom stick and listened everywhere i could under the truck. I kept thinking it was comming from the transfer case but as soon as i hit the cats I could hear it clear as a bell through the stick. Couldnt realy hear it on the exhaust at any point before the cats.
But loudest on the driver side cat.
some one else try this, lets get a consensus.
