I have a 2001 F250 V10 Crew Cab with a 4" lift and 35" tires. Including a Super Chip. Im not sure what my gear ratio is. Looking to tow an Open Road TT weighing in at 8500lbs. Will be pulling up pretty steep grades. Will I have enough power. How about a K&N? Is there anything I should know. Thanks.
i think that your v10 will have no ploblem at all pulling your trailer. and another thing in my opionin a air filter doesnt make he worlds biggest difference but for $50 bucks why not.
vibetech - i pulled a 7500lb TT with 2 quads in the back of my truck up some steep grades for a few years with no problem. trying to pull around 75mph on the flats wasn't that great, stayed in 3rd at about 3k rpm. But on the hills it would downshift to 2nd and go like he, uhh, heck.
As far as the k&n portion of it, if you want the throaty sound, go for it. i put the fipk on my truck and it didn't really do anything but make the engine a bit louder (which helps move traffic when they hear me coming).

What's the axle code - the one on the label of your door post?
I tow a 8000 TT, and have the 3.73 rear gears, so its not quite as robust when working it out in the mountains like the 4.30's are.
Pulled to Yellowstone this summer via I80 East to West, through Dubois into Grand Teton, 8% grade 9600ft pass - 2nd gear. Had plenty of go, only slowed by road and those in front of me. But then how fast do you want to go at 9000 ft with an extra 8000 extra pounds on a winding road?
I had a K&N in my 01 PSD and always found fine dust in the pelenium . I am useing a Amsoil Foam Filter now on my 04 V-10. Same $, close onflow figures, and washable.
I used my sisters 01 F-250 V10/AT (totally stock with 23k miles) to pull an S-10 blazer on a flatbed, and it did all right, had trouble on the hills, was able to maintain 55mph in 2nd gear, although limit was 65. Better than my 79 I guess, I would have been doing 35mph in 3rd gear.(4spd)

With 4.30 gears and 35" tires you have effectively dropped to around 3.78, which still aint bad. The bad thing about an 8500 pound trailer is they normally don't weigh what the tag reads, especially with water tanks partially full, an a/c or two on the roof, propane, food, gear, etc and then there's all the weight of the gear in the truck, including passengers, fuel, gear, etc. My 24' says 3250 on the tag and in the advertisements. I weighed it with empty tanks after I bought it, it weighed 5300+. I have 3.73 gears, basically what you have with your increased tire height. I wish I had 4.10's for when I towed. Not because the truck won't tow it, it does. But to keep the engine in it's most efficient powerband the 4.10's would be better suited and would work better. Your tow rating is less than what your manual says with your larger tires. I'd bet you're hauling close to 11,000 pounds around. Your transmission works harder, and gets hotter with your 3.75 gears and that big of a trailer. Get a good tranny cooler, change to a synthetic tranny fluid, rear end lube and change the fluids often.
My brother and I bought identical trucks in 93, 1 ton, crew cab 7.3 non-IDI diesels with 4.10 gears front and rear (4X4's). I went to 36" tires and 5.10 gears. He went to 38" tires and no gear change. The $1,000 I spent to replace front and rear gears repayed itself several times over as he was replacing transmissions and carrier bearings/u-joints. The gears will be a good investment over time plus give you back alot of the snap you lost in acceleration, Ken
I sure see K&N filters mentioned here a LOT. I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd put my .02 in here. I would certainly do some research into this one before using K&N. K&N is OK for racing apps where max flow is required and the engine has a short life expectancy anyway because of the nature of how it's used. In other words, it doesn't matter if some contamination gets in because the increased wear isn't going to shorten the already short life expectancy of the engine. I have raced different vehicles over the years, and we used K&N's with good results, but I wouldn't use one on a vehicle I want a long life out of. As I've seen mentioned, there is very little performance gain in a stock vehicle. **FOR ME**, the reduction in filtering capacity is NOT worth the very slight if any flow increase. THE NEW STOCK PAPER FILTERS BREATH AND FILTER VERY WELL. With most passenger vehicles, the restriction is elsewhere in the air flow hardware.
I just got an air hog at the local parts store. It seems to fit all v-10's. Drove to Fla and back 3000 miles. no difference in gas mileage. It looks just like a K&N.
