Rev limiter........GRRRRR!!!
'bout a month ago I put a new set of points in the mallory dizzy in the '69. Now it'd been like 8 yrs since I put points in this truck, but with the limited use it did not have alot of miles on them. I did a full tune up with cap/rotor/points to just remove any chance of old age rearing its head.
After setting everything up to snuff, I made my way down the road a couple miles to the Sunday Arby's cruise. It just about did not make it to a parking spot
. It started barely running, on like 4 cylinders. I did not stay long due to evening coming and wanted to get home before dark. I could not get it out of the parking lot. It would not hardly even run....then POOF it clears out and runs like always
. It made it home without incident. Now, fast forward to today. I start with checking dwell, timing, carbs, etc. Nothing out of place, but still won't rev hardly at all. Cough, backfire, chugg'n. After going thru things 5 times over, it dawned on me. I have a Mallory adj rev limiter, after disconnecting it....VIOLA' it runs PERFECT
. Seems that the rev limiter was on it's last leg and now was cutting ignition
.With all the tearing dizzy apart, I went ahead and pulled one of the advance springs off(leaving only one lightweight one). After getting it all back to roadworthyness I made a pass up the big road......
So, the moral to the story............... next time you have rough running issues...............unplug that freak'n rev limiter!
If it's not snowin' this week, I guess I'll have to take it to work one more time
I run a MSD 6AL on race car and have high side set at 6800. It too is just a safety factor since it's a stick shift also. If I ran an automatic then there would be no sense in it.
Yup, I drove it to work today. One of the few nice days showing on weather this week. Sure is fun to drive....just a real pain in the wallet to fuel it
