01 smoking at start up

I have a 01 psd that has started smoking on cold start ups it smoked this morning for about 1 or 2 min then it went away i reved it up to about 1800 to see if it would put out any more it wouldn't while the rpm's were building but when i let off it it would smoke, i done a search and read alot of useful info but was wondering if anybody else has this problem on such a newer truck it a 01 with 30,000 on the speedo it's enough smoke to be embarasing, smoked about as much as my toyota did when it blew a head gasket, but like i say only lasted for 1 or 2 mins, the temp here this mornin was about 45 deg.

white smoke is unburned fuel, you may have a problem with the glow pug system, one or more glowplugs out or a GPR(glow plug realy) that is bad or going out. take it to an "autozone" or "checker auto" and have them scan it and see if there are any codes...at least that is a place to start

ps. my GPR went out at around 20,000 miles

something else i should add, mine puts out a good amount of white smoke when it is cold. i dont think its quite as much as you are describing but it well put a good blanket of smoke down. i have found that if i wait to start it until about a count of 20-30 after the "wait to start light" has gone off it does it alot less. it will also do it alot less if i have my chip set to "stock" and not one of the other programs(but that only makes sence)

Yep - I'd say some/all of your glow plugs are not working right. IF that's it - you're gonna have a hard time getting it started if it gets much colder. My buddy had his GPR go bad - and the white smoke would literally envelop his truck - could hardly see it through the smoke!

this mornin i cycled the glow plugs a couple times then started it. It didn't smoke as bad it quit after about one min or so but while it was idleing it started up again just barely enough to see , is this glow plug related also or u think i have other problems.
