Question New V10 - Surging?

Just purchased a 2004 F250 V10 a week a go. Currently has 650 miles. Took it up to the cabin for it's maiden voyage and the first thing that happened is that when braking the engine started to race. This happened at least a half dozen times during the 300 mile round trip. This was not during cold running, it could occur at any time. At one point I slipped the tranny into neutral and the truck ran up to 4000 RPM. After a couple seconds it drop down to normal idle.

Took it into a local Ford dealer - They checked the truck over and found nothing. No codes or faults where recorded by the engine managment system. They said the truck is fine and I picked it up today. I dove the truck to work tonight about 35 miles and had not problems.

Any Ideas?

I live in Minnesota and if this happens on the icy roads I will not stand a chance staying on the road or could hit someone for sure.

Thanks,

Jim

Idle Air Control??? Hard to believe on a new motor but it's possible I guess.

Disconnect the battery for about 45 minutes, reconnect it, then take it on a normal stroll around several blocks.

Another thought came to mind.

The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) maybe bad or at least the connection to it. You could get a digital meter (KEY ON/ENGINE OFF) and check to see if there's resistance.

I can't walk you thru it, but there's a process here somewhere...or maybe pickup a maintenance manual such as Chilton's - a must for the DIYers.

The keep the big foot off the gas is probably closer than you think. Mine does this same thing from time to time. Scares me everytime it happens. And sure enough when I look down my foot is on both the gas and the brake.

If the TPS were acting up would not that show a code on the computer when they checked it?

Also do you guy's find your leg gets tired from holding up your foot? There is not enough upward pressure on the gas pedel to support the weight of your foot.

Maybe I am a big foot.

tsjries,

You may have a mechanical problem, however I bought my truck in Anchorage, Alaska and when driving in the winter with big snow boots I would occasionally catch the edge of the gas peddle when braking.

The half go / half stop thing is a startling experience if you are trying to stop quickly!

Three months and 3000 miles on the new 05 V10. Twice I have scared the bejeezus out of me and wife by trying to stop for a light at over 3000RPM!

I had to really grunt down on the brake pedal to get the beast stopped.

Turns out to be my technique and in certain boots my lazy right foot only catches the right most part of the brake pedal and still overlaps the top part of the throttle pedal. In this situation, as the brake pedal goes down so does the gas pedal!

I had to deliberatly spend the next week training my right foot to completely get on the brake pedal.

Thumbs up Has not been back

Thanks to all for the good words. I have not had this happen again since my first trip. The truck has performed perfectly. I am starting to believe it could be the foot thing.

Thanks,

Jim
