my 75 has 3.00 gears and I would raise the same question. with a big block it doesn't take much to launch it though. it probrobly has something to do with keeping the rpm's down for gas mileage.....

The idea was to get a higher rear gear for better mileage on the highway. Some pickups had even higher gears - 2.73 or so.

your friend is correct, 4.10's are numerically higher reduction, which is how ratio''s are supposed to be referred to.

Yep, those GM guys will do that.

I got 3.00 gears in my 79 F150 4x4. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't run tires of any decent size without burning the clutch out in a hurry. I getting som 33's and that'll be pushing it.

3:00 gears and 33s = burnt clutch. You're right You needs some 31s or 4:11s. Don't nit pick me on the ratios boys

3.00s are great for a stock 300-6 with 29" tires, you need something deeper for anything else.
