Searched all posts, need overdrive help
It's been awhile since I posted. The 1950 F1 is running great, but is being parked for the winter. Her replacement is a 1995 Ranger XLT Longbed 2.3 Automatic 2wd with 115000 miles. I love my new truck (even though it's a dog compared to the 239v8), but there are a few problems I need help with:
The Ranger seems confused when on the highway. It won't shift or stay in overdrive. I have switched o/d on and off and it doesn't affect the rpms in any way. It runs 70mph at about 3000rpms. Is that normal? It seems like it's a little high. Sometimes, when I count gears it seems like it shifts four times, but high gear really doesn't feel like overdrive. Also, there is an occasional burning trans fluid smell when I stop. No smoke, just a burning smell. I know that is a wierd question, but I've searched every post I can find and no-one seems to have the same problem.
Also, when idling, the rpms are really low. It doesn't die, but it acts like it wants to. Sensor, perhaps? Which one? Air cleaner?
Long post, I know. Any help will be appreciated!
Sounds like your tranny's torque convertor might be on the blink. You can try changing out the fluid to see if that helps.
Regarding the low idle, it might be that your Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is not doing it's job properly.
