Masking Tape? What is the best (or better) kind of masking tape to use? I used several brands and colors of tape recently in the process of painting (Epoxy Sealer, 2K Primer & Acrylic Enamel) my truck . Most didn’t work at all. One in particular, Scotch Brand, that did work, the adhesive seemed to have melted from the paint and left lots of sticky residue.
A friend stopped by to critique my paintjob and asked if I could spray his rolling tool chests. He wants them to match his ’69 Z/28, which is metallic green with white rally stripes. I want to be sure to use the correct tape for the stripes.
Is there a brand or type of tape I should look for? Are there brands I should avoid? I’ve seen on the show “Overhaulin”, that they use a green masking tape. Anyone have an idea what brand?
the green tape most likely is the 3m stuff really good I'll look up a part number for you tommorow I don't feel like walking to our other shop to find out right now :-P
The best tape for bodywork is probable 3M, expensive but worth it. It sticks nicely, seals so paint won't run underneath it and ruin ya stripes or other work like that. They make the green one your talking about the also different one's for different particular uses such as blue fineline, which I use when taping off flames and other things like that. Your local autobody paint supplier should have a good selection for you to choose from.
I like the 3M fine line, it gives a good clean edge cut paint well so it does not drag up uncured paint and streches so you can make curves. For larger areas I put the fine line down the regular tape over with paper.
I've used 3M tape most of the time with OK results - however there was a time during the 80's when I had a problem with it releasing without leaving glue residue. That caused me to go out of my way to get Martin Senior tape (NAPA) I NEVER had a problem with Martin Senior. A somewhat less aggressive adheasion than 3M, but always released great, and was consistant.
If you have a NAPA store in your area, try Martin Senior!!
