I have a 1999 ranger extra cab with flex fuel. It has 78000 miles on it . The truck would only run on 89 octane or it would ping like mad. I bought a chalet pop up camper that weights about 1400 pounds to go traveling to N.C. I put in 92 octane to pull the chalet well went I got up to 70 mph the trucked pinged so bad I was going to take the camper back home and leave with out it. I stopped and got a bottle of octane booster and a bottle of blaster fuel injecter cleaner. The injection cleaner is good for 2 tank fulls. I put both in the tank and headed north. With in a mile or two no more pinging. Next tank full I put more of the blaster injection cleaner. Still no more pinging. Since I have got back from my trip I have been putting in 87 octane with no pinging. I also use blaster injecter cleaner ever 3rd tank of gas still no pinging on 87 octane. With the price of gas today every little bit helps.
Your FFV has larger injectors than a regular 3.0L, so I would think that if they get dirty, your truck might run even leaner. Maybe that's why a good fuel system cleaning has helped out so much.
Speaking of which, when is the last time you changed out your fuel filter?
It has been about 20000 miles ago. One more thing I have had done was the dealer installed a new coil pack and pcm because of the pinging but this did not help. I think the pinging is from injectors and carbon build up.
I have the regular 3.0 and I tried everything without success. Finally I changed my EGR valve. Cheap part and 5 minutes to replace. That did the trick.
