Is it ok to leave the tranny extension housing on and remove the bushing from it with a slidehammer, or is it better to remove the housing and press out the bushing? I've heard both ways suggested and wonder why you would go to the extra effort of removing the housing. I am about to do this job and don't want to mess it up if there is a problem with using the slidehammer.
Appreciate any replies.
After you remove the rear seal, there doesn't seem to be much room between the bushing and the splined output shaft. Do you think you will get the fingers of your slidehammer in there? ...Terry
Overkill-F1 - that's a good question. SInce I haven't done this yet I am not sure. A Ford dealer tranny tech told me that is a way to do it; his only comment was that sometimes the old bushing can be a little difficult to remove. Maybe I misunderstood him and he meant to use the slidehammer after releasing the extension housing?
A slide hammer adapter will need jaws only about 1/8th inch thick and fairly long (3"?). The dealership I used to work for had a special tool for each size of bushing, it had long thin jaws and a forcing screw right in it to pull the bushing. The tool was many years old and I don't know if its still available. It also takes a special tool to drive the new bushing in. The easiest way to change the bushing without the proper tools is to remove the extension housing. Be extremely careful not to damage the inside bore of the housing when removing or installing both the seal and the bushing.
