Parking on an Incline?

Here is the situation. I was low on fuel and parked my truck on a downward incline and couldn't get it started. (This happened to me on my 97 Mountaineer and I just let it roll to a level spot and it started right up) When I tried to start it it made a "clicking sound" from the small "unit" located on the passenger side right above the wheel well. After several failed attempts we tried plugging the white "nozzel" coming out of this "unit" with our finger. Then it started right up. Please excuse my "technical" vocabulary =) Any ideas? Is this as simple as not parking on a downward incline low on fuel, or does it sound like it could be something else?

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that there's a switch that determines what position the truck is in when the engine is shut off so that it can either stop fuel from going to the engine or continue access. It's a safety feature in the event of an accident or something. If your truck rolls over, it will stop fuel from pumping out onto the road or whatever.

I had a buddy with a diesel up in the mountains for boy scout camp. He parked his truck on an incline and it wouldn't start the next morning. Didn't know about this switch (I believe it's located by the fuel tanks), had to call a tow truck. Could have taken care of it himself had he known.
