Chrome or Polished Stainless Steel Step Bars 99 SCab 4x2

Hello,

What are the best Chrome or Stainless Steel Step bars to mount on the 99 4.2 SCab?

Stainless or Chrome? Seems like stainless would last longer and can be polished.

How do they look on it? Its white with gold trim...

Where is the best place to buy?

Thanks.

Dave

Dave,

The following is from the Westin web site.

"Research confirms that raw polished stainless steel can develop a yellowish, dull tint in a short period of time and it's impossible to get the original luster back without professional polishing. Westin has solved this problem with the new Platinum Series step bar, a stainless steel tube finished with chrome plating or black semi-gloss powdercoat paint that provides maximum rust-free performance. These bars use the same well-thought-out bracket and step pad design as other Westin step bars, and are backed by a lifetime warranty against rust. All Platinum Series Step Bars feature Westin's easy no-drill installation."

I bought a set of the chrome nerf bars over a year ago. Love them.

Here are a few links with install instructions and where I bought mine from.

Wow....and I was gonna say go with the stainless steel. Guess I need to re-think that one. I guess it would depend on what you are gonna do with the truck...Chrome can get chipped and rust.....stainless steel wont...but the yellowing...don't want that. Thanks for the info CHARLESH

Thumbs up

I've got a set of the Westin black powder coated bars on my '99 F150. After three years, the first set did rust on the undersides near the front tires, probably due to the tires throwing crap against them in the northern winter. Went to my local dealer, who ordered me a replacement set under Westin's warranty. My only cost was half an hour's labor to put on the new ones, and it reset the five year warranty clock back to zero, to boot.

Though I've never had a set of Westin's in chrome, based on my experience with the black ones, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Good quality prouduct, and the company stands behind it.

Thanks for the info, but now you tell me.

I just bought the Lund fine stainless polished Bug Shield. Now I get to look forward to yellowing.. Is there anything you can do to polish it out or protect it?

Thanks,
Dave

If there are any boating stores near you, they would have stainless steel polish. One thing to keep in mind is to avoid a "gritty" polish -- I read a test once where roughening the surface ends up causing more discoloration.

I bought a pair of the Westin chrome/stainless this spring. We'll see how they do up here in the Michigan winters! They have re-engineered the design, so the tread depression is stamped and the bar is left complete. Instead of cutting out a hole to place the plastic tread plate-should be a big improvement!
As far as bug deflector, stainless is kinda soft and will scratch with any "gritty" polish! You may be able to laquer it after it is polished out. Oblviously they take alot of abuse!
