clamp on thermocoupler for EGT

Does anyone else have the clamp on thermocoupler for your EGT gauge? This is the way I went for the ease of installation. My problem is the washer they sent was damaged. I have an exhaust leak and I'm wondering if the washer is sufficient enough to seal the leak or should I use a high temp silicone ontop of the washer? The gauge works fine and it is Pre turbo.

I assume you have a new washer to put on... There isn't an RTV sealant in existence that can handle the heat of the exhaust pipe. You might get away with buying an exhaust repair tape kit & making your own washers, but remember what your pyro says the temp is...

Just got off the phone with a local performance shop, and they said that a piece of cardboard about the same size would work. I asked him wouldn't the heat catch the cardboard on fire? He said they have done it several times. Does this sound crazy to anyone else?

It sounds like a 'salesman', not a technician or mechanic, giving you his advice. I'd trust the words of wisdom from this forum more than a counter 'salesman'. Make a few more calls, perhaps to the pyrometer manufacturer. Or be patient and wait for the correct recommendation from someone on this forum for a replacement part.

Had the same problem when I installed my EGT. Broke the ceramic washer and used a high temp gasket material (designed for exhaust manifolds) to serve the same purpose. I ended up with an exhaust leak and had to order the ceramic washer from the factory to do the job right.

More commonly known as "Refractory cement" , high temp stuff for flues, chimney work, boiler flue and crack repairs, etc.

Good Luck
