"Impossible" to lift 72` F100?!

Howdy`
First time in the offroad forums. I have a 69` F-250 that is a streetrod of sorts but now I also have a 1972 F100 2 wheel drive shortbed. I am hoping someone in here can help me with a problem I am having. I want to lift my truck- I know, lifting a 2 wheel drive blah blah blah. I dont plan on going 4x4ing, but I do go offroading when I go shooting or out with my brother (71` Bronco). I am looking to go with 2 or 3 inches suspension, then some meaty 32s or 33s... just a simple lift, nothing extreme. However, I went to the local 4x4 shop and they said "you cant lift this truck if you want to be able to steer it". Apparently due to the steering arm going through something...? The man said I cant do it but I know others have done it before. Is there a kit out there? Custom fabrication? Please help!
Thank you,
Tristin Marrs

I know nothing about doing a suspension lift on a 2x4 1971. But, on your truck, a 2x4 1971 F-100, I would start with a custom body lift of two inches and make your own poly body mounts that double as a body lift. This should get you enough room to run 33s. On my truck (1971 F-100 4x4 ) someone trimmed the front fenders, which is easy to do on this series truck to run 33s.

look behind your front axle, you'll see the steering linkage back there. The tierods go through teh radius arms which would make it quite interesting to lift. ALOT of work. . .

look here: http://autofab.com/65-79.htm they have a 3 inch lift, a 5 inch lift and a long travel kit offering 16 inches of travel. They have pictures of lifted pre-72 2x4's in the gallery.

Lifting a 72 F-100

One Fine69,I lifted the front of my 72 F-100 4 inches.I took the truck to a fab shop that specialised in suspension mods. They took the I-beams and cut the jog out just past the kingpin location. Then they added a section to take the place of the jog section that dropped down about a half inch and then back to the spindle part and welded it all back together with the original geometry remaning the same. The remodeled I-beams were tested for strength and reinstalled with 72 F-350 2wd springs and HD shocks.I had swapped the rear end earlier with a Dana 60 and I had F-250 hub and spindles ready for them to install in the front as the kingpins are the same. The steering and shock mounts do not change in this fabrication so there is no steering issue. After the new wheels were installed they sent it off to an alignment shop.I put 33x12.50 16.5 rims and tires on,the Dana 60 rear brought the rear tires out even with the front tires and now it handles like a sportscar when empty, well sort of.That was almost 30 years ago and I will be driving it to work today.Have fun!
