400 flywheel

Continuing with the saga of my rebuild...

I'm trying to locate a 400 manual flywheel for my truck. I swapped out the 351c and my buddy had a 400 manual bell housing, but I need the flywheel for it. I've called the local parts houses and got a lot of no's, same answer with the junkyards. The local speed shop can order me one, but they need either the casting numbers or the diameter, balance, and tooth count for the original, which I don't have. Does anyone have a source for this? I know that the 351c flywheel is roughly 1.5" too small. Also, everyone asks if it was a 11" or 12" clutch.

Okay, I believe I have answered my own question, (a quick call to Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan), please correct me if I have the wrong info.

400 flywheel has:
176 tooth ring gear, 15.52" diameter overall, and 11" clutch

According to the information I found on the net the stock 400 flywheel had 180 tooth ring gear. Most of the aftermarket flywheels I could find are 176 tooth tho'.

A quick look at Dave's (bubbaF250) page shows a current service part # of E5TZ-6375-H. You might want to check with your local Ford parts dept.

Okay, so far we are right. The 400 flywheel apparently also came with a 11 and 12" clutch with no change to the flyweel size. I am still having a hellufa time finding this thing. All of the junkyards say that they don't have anything that old. I'm still calling around though.

Okay, I found a flywheel, and at the last place I was expecting. I went to the auto clone where I used to work, and they can order it for me. 45 bucks with anoher 45 in core charge. I don't think I'm gonna beat that anywhere. I honestly didn't think they would have it.

Well, autozone was too good to be true. Turns out that the shipping costs doubled the overall price. I did a little more research and found a guy with a shop and a yard full of Fords. He sold me a flywheel for 50 bucks. While he was getting the flywheel out of his "parts storage" van, I noticed a set of headers still in the original box. I asked if he would be willing to part with them, and he sold them to me for another 50 bucks. The flywheel and headers are in, and the motor turns over great. When I get off of my work rotation, I'm going to go and get it started. Thanks for all of the advice and help so far!!!
