I have an '01 Escape with 40k miles - about 3 weeks ago the gear indicator went crazy - when in park it shows Park and 1st gear, in Drive it shows Drive, 2nd and 1st Gear - thought it was just a loose wire that I'd deal with at oil change time but last week my stereo speakers went - occassionally (for maybe 2 blocks at a time) they work - the stereo seems to operate - just no sound - now today, going up a hill, the tranny seemed to be slipping - was bogging down, shaking, etc - I pulled over for a few - then proceeded (at a much slower pace) and got home okay - has this happened (or anything similar) to anyone? if so, was it ever resolved? I'm hoping it's just a minor electrical "fix"
The trannie is controlled by the computer. You can try to reset it by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and see if it resets. If not, you may have to take it to the dealer to get it reflashed. Now for the bad news. The CD4E trannie and it's torque converter in the Escape are noted for problems, and a rebuild costs around $3500
I brought my rig into the shop today for diagnostics - should get a call back tomorrow. I seriously hope if it is the transmission that Ford would be willing to work with me as it is just 4k outside of the warranty!!! I'll let you all know what I hear from the shop tomorrow
Okay - got it out of the shop for a mere $180 - turned out the transmission sensor was out which caused the gear indicator to read multiple gears at a time AND it caused my speakers to quit functioning (go figure) it's been replaced and all is well again!!! One question I have though, after reading all the posts on transmission issues - is it a good idea to turn off the overdrive function when just tooling around town at lower speeds? or does it really matter much?
There are varying opinions among owners and Ford hasn't provided any guidance. Personally, I'd turn overdrive off in-town if I was driving primarily in-town. I would also turn it off if it was constantly "hunting" when my speed kept varying between 40mph and 50mph. BUT, since I do most of my driving at highway speeds I leave overdrive on.
