1960 F100 4x4 Front/rear Axle Ratios Needed

I have a 1960 F100 4x4, 292 V8, Warner 4 speed and I am not sure what axle ratios are needed.

I do know the front end has a 3.92 (by pulling off the inspection cover and seeing that is has 47-12 stamped in the crown gear and this was an option along with a 4.55). The rear end has been changed at some time in the trucks life it has a 3.25 which makes the front and rear end fight each other while being in four wheel drive. Do both ratios need to be the same?

The VIN/plate/tag is stamped 02 for the axle and in the 1960 Ford Truck manual/parts books I have tells me it should be a 3.89 is this too big a difference between the two axles? If this is the correct rear end ratio where does one purchase the correct crown and pinion?

Second question, did the 1960 the rear end case have a two vertical ribs from the top to middle of the case for this truck or just one.

SERIAL NMBER = F10COK35916
WB = 118
COLOR = F
MODEL = F103
DATE = 258
TRANS = FA
AXLE = 02
MAX GVW LBS = 5600
CERT NET HP =146
RPM = 3800
DSO = 1523

Thank you for your help

The front end ratio on my 64 ford 4x4 is 3.92 front and a 3.89 rear and the factory parts and accessories book says the same ratios are correct for a 60 model pickup as well. Hope this helps.

Hi Monte, and welcome to FTE!

Highboy4x4 is right on with the ratios.
In fact, the '59 and '60 4x4's were only available with these following ratios:

F-100
Dana 44-4F front axle..... 3.92 gear ratio
Ford 9" rear axle............. 3.89 gear ratio

F-250
Dana 44-4F front axle..... 4.55 gear ratio
Dana 60 rear axle .......... 4.56 gear ratio

The 9" rear axle housing has the two vertical ribs.

Your serial number decodes as follows:

F10..............1/2 ton conventional cab
C.................292 V-8
0.................1960 Model Year
K..................Kansas City (assembly plant)
35916...........Sequential production number

Your rating plate info:

WB 118...............................118" Wheelbase
Color F................................Skymist Blue
Model F103..........................F-100, 4 Wheel Drive, 5,600 GVW
Date 258.............................(last number should be a letter) 25=25th day of month, letter = month (for example: S = month of May)
Trans F...............................4 Speed synchronized manual
Axle 02...............................3.89 to 1 rear axle ratio
Max GVW LBS 5600...............Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight = 5,600 Lbs.
Cert Net HP 146/RPM 3800.....146 Certified Net Horsepower @ 3,800 RPMs.
DSO 1523............................District/Dealer Special Order (Means your truck was ordered special from the factory by the dealer. It may have also been part of a fleet at one time).

I hope this helps.

my 60 4x4 has those ratio's in it and believe it or not it pulls like nothing that you've ever seen in the snow. but do not try to drive it on dry pavement or wet pavement. Ford made the front axle lower so it would pull more
