A lot of shelves are the key. If you have open rafters, build a second story on them to put your "junk" up there where it's out of the way, that helps a lot. Biggest thing I found it that everything should have it's place, and should always be put back where you got it from. That's how garages and shops get so messy, someone gets something out, uses it, and leaves it there. Then it just keeps getting pushed out of the way.
Good luck with it, we had probably one of the worst(messiest) farm shops anywhere, but are building a new and bigger one. Looking forward to trying to keep it clean!
Lots of shelves are helpfull, but I was able to keep my garage much neater after I installed a pull down stair so that I could store 'seasonal' items in the attic area of the garage. Now I just need to get that new circuit wired into the panel so that I can put a light up there....
i think one key to keeping the shop clean is learning how to throw stuff away, if your like me you always save "crap" thinking heck i might can use that for something one day, but usually it just sits in the way, if you dont really need it, get rid of it, chances are the space and time saved is going to be worth the cost lost by chunking it.

That is very true!!!!!!! My old man does that, and I hate it!! We could barely walk around in our old shop there was so much crap laying around.
That one there never dawned on me....I save everything, down to 1/2" peices of scrap metal. It'll never get used most likely but it's in the garage somewhere. Good advice f250
After one gets a place for everything, he (she) has to stick to it. I hate to get up to yesterday's mess. Even with a long term job one has to finish the day by cleaning up the shop and putting the tools away clean.....before dinner.... .....and getting a place for everything is an evolutionary thing.
