ZF 5-spd leaking fluid out of the top of the case?
Hi guys,
I have been noticing that the 5-spd in my 94' F250 (it's the ZF gearbox) has been leaking fluid. It's getting all over both side of the transmission, and when I wipe it off it comes back.
The only place that I can seem to think it is coming from is the top of the case? I haven't taken off the shifter boot but is there any gasket and/or seal up there that wears out? The dealer has not been great help on this one.
Thanks,
Bryan

There are two gaskets on top of the transmission. There's one between the case and the shift tower held on by 8 bolts and a small one between the shift tower and the gearshift boot retainer plate held on by four bolts. Maybe the bolts just need a tightening? That's kind of unusual for a ZF S542 to do that. The Mazda M5R2's have a history of leaking from the three shift rail plugs at the back of the shift tower. Are you sure it's an S542?
