i have an 86 bronco, after i bought it it sat for a year and a half while i built a motor. when it finally got around to driving it the back window wouldnt work. i found some wires unpluged so i pulged them in, still nothing. i ended up taking a battery and jumping it and it goes up and down fine. i havent ever locked the thing because i live in a small town and the top is always off of it. is there some thing in the locking mechanism on the tailgate that makes a circuit for the window? any help on where to start looking for my problem would be greatly appreciated. i havent had much time to look at it lately becasue it has been having vacuum advance timing issues but i would like to get it fixed because winter is gonna roll around here pretty soon and i dont want to be popping the hood and stealing the battery to power my window up or down.
If you do a search in this forum...you will find enough info to choke a horse. The first thing you want to do is push in real hard on the drivers side of the tailgate while operating the key switch or having someone operate the dash switch. There is a safety switch on the latch, inside the tailgate on that side that will keep the window from working if it doesn't think the tailgate is closed all the way. Now you can either replace the switch, bypass it, or replace the bushing on the latch post. Any of those 3 will help. If that doesn't fix it, then check the harness that runs along the same side fo the tailgate. This is a known bad spot for wires breaking. If nothing still, then make sure you are getting power to that harness. If so, look at replacing the dash switch since that is the master. If no power to the harness, then start from the back and trace forward till you find the break.
Just had the same problem with my 88. Found lots of info here, if you do a search, including wiring diagrams. The problem with mine was it would go down but not back up with either the key of dash switch.
If you jumpered a battery to the motor and it worked, it probably isn't the tailgate latch switch. If it was the motor won't work, unless you went right to the motor. The problem may be the dash switch. If you take the switch out of the dash and pop it open and see if the contacts are dirty or corroded. You could use some contact cleaner to clean them. If that works a new switch is only $18 to $20.
I have a related question:
Does anyone have a reasonably-priced source for the rear window key switch?
I balk at replacing the entire wiring harness, at $200+, just because the switch is bad.
I wouldn't have any problem splicing wires to connect a new switch, though.
Anyone?
