That just about describes the sound my 300 is putting out when running. It's loud enough to be noticed over the engine and my radio, and I know it's coming from the fan clutch/timing gear area in the front of the engine, but it's not in the valvetrain or powertrain.
The engine is still running strong, the fan still comes on, so I'm stumped.
Your timing gears could be chipped or ready to blow. Mine did that exact same thing. Worse case would be a broken rod. I would check out the timing gears first and replace them with metal ones. The stock gears are plastic or fiber and when they get brittle the explode. I could be wrong but that is my experiance.
I agree, My timing gears did that before they crapped out miles from home. when they go it will just shut off, and when you hit the starter it just spins really fast. Get steel replacements.
Mine were around 60-70 bux. Have a die grinder ready just incase because my plasic gears broke when I was using my puller and I had to cut the metal ring that presses on the cam. Plan on pulling your radiator and much of the stuff in the front part of the of the engine. When you put the new gear on be sure to put the gear in hot water to expand it and use plenty of lube since it is a press fit. There is a threaded hole in the front of the cam(I cant remember the size, 7/16 mayby?) you can make your own press using a GRADE 8 bolt and some washers and some pipe or deep well socket. use a light duty impact to gently zip it on. If you replace it before it goes completely out it will save you a lot of time. I had to get the TDC all lined back up since mine failed on the highway and that added to the aggrevation. It should take you about a day.
P.S. I should add mine is a 94, but i am assuming they are all about the same

What years used the steel gears? I am thinking of replacing mine before they go bad... I have 215,000 on the origionals now.. My local parts store morons can't look anything up without a direct application and the kit that comes up for my 90 efi has a steel crank gear and that fiber cam gear ....
I would try another parts store like carquest or napa. Im guessing you went to autozone or similar. I dont know what years, but there should be an optional part# for steel next to the standard ones. Mine are Sealed Power Brand.
