Post I'm a little frustrated.....

I'm a little frustrated because my CD player won't work properly. In the 3-years that I've owned my X, something like this has never happened. For example, if I put a CD in, the first 4 or 5 tracks sound good. Anything above that doesn't sound good. Its mainly alot of "popping" and "scratching" sounds. (this happens with burned CDs and the normal kind) Some tracks won't even play. I've tried almost all of my CDs and this happens with most of them. I also tried cleaning the lens with CD cleaners (discs with brushes on them) and the player just spits them out and says: "disc error".

I spoke to a service advisor at my dealership and he suggested that I try cleaning it and then coming back tomorrow morning. That didn't work, so before I go in tomorrow and end up having to spend money for this, do any of you have any suggestions? In addition to that, has this happened to any of you?

For the record, I have the CD and cassette radio. Not the 6-disc changer.

Try taking the unit out, and take it apart. Once it is apart, clean it up using isopropyl alcohol, and a q-tip. That should work better than the cleaning discs. OR, take the deck to a car install place or electronics store and have them clean it for you.

Not to get you bummed, but I suggest an aftermarket unit or look for a stock one on Ebay. I know new ones do not fit into the dash as well as stock, but you get better quality and a new unit for close to what would be charged to clean/fix yours. I had one inspected at a electronics reapair shop that had free estimates. He explained after opening it that it would need a cleaning and a part that seems to be a weak link in many OEM units. He said he would need 80, 70 with military ID. I bought a pioneer unit with free install for around 120 and was much happier. I had an amp and the preouts were much better than the lline out converter. Dont laugh, but it was in a taurus.

sounds like perhaps the mechanism or the laser is going out to me. I had one do that and no cleaning in the world helped it. Had to buy a new unit. Hey maybe take the oportunity to upgrade to a six-cd in dash unit. You can pick up new pull outs for little money. I got one for my F150 and love it.
